Atominvest AI Series: Part One | Written by: Dan Tyler, AI Portfolio Management Specialist
In this piece: why the infrastructure underneath your portfolio data matters more than the data itself, why AI makes this more urgent not less, and what the firms getting it right have in common.
The foundation is the problem
The data problem in private markets is fundamentally an infrastructure problem. Not a data problem.
The portfolio management setups we see span the full range. The configurations vary enormously. The underlying pattern does not. Data arrives sporadically. Gets reconciled manually. Lives in too many places for anyone to fully trust. The instinct is to treat that as a data quality issue. In practice it is structural. The operating model around the data is what needs fixing, not the data itself.
Getting that foundation right is the most important decision a firm can make right now. Not because it is a prerequisite for good reporting. Because it is a prerequisite for everything that follows.
AI is a multiplier. Not a solution.
We are at a genuine inflection point. The AI tools available to private markets teams today are extraordinary, and what is possible now was not possible twelve months ago. The opportunity is real.
But AI makes good infrastructure dramatically more powerful. It makes poor infrastructure harder to ignore. The firms that will define the next decade of portfolio management are not necessarily the ones moving fastest. They are the ones getting the foundations right before they build on top of them.
The repeatable work needs a system. The people need to focus on the irreplaceable work. When those two things are not aligned, the best analysts in the room spend their week in a spreadsheet. Quarterly reporting becomes a scramble. Board packs rebuilt from scratch each cycle. Drop AI onto that and you accelerate the problem, not the solution.
What the firms getting it right have in common
The firms genuinely transforming their portfolio intelligence today all started in the same place. The foundation. Disciplined data ingestion. A single source of truth the whole team trusts. Workflows built around how they actually operate. AI embedded from the start, not added afterwards.
The firms that skip this stage and go straight to AI capability tend to find themselves solving the wrong problem faster. The ones that get the foundation right first find that everything after it moves quickly.
One system. One trusted dataset.
At Atominvest, AI is not a feature. It is the operating system. Built in from the moment data enters, through ongoing analysis and intelligence, to full connectivity with leading LLMs and external systems. One thing, not two things joined together. We work with clients to design infrastructure and operating models that work for them.
The distance between where most firms are today and what is genuinely achievable is shorter than most people think, provided the approach is right.
